It was this war that made him hate communism in favour of the English brand of socialism. On the Sunday that the pigs offer the windmill to the animals for a vote, Napoleon summons a pack of ferocious dogs, who chase Snowball off the farm forever.

Contrary to the principles of Animalism, Napoleon hires a solicitor and begins trading with neighboring farms. The animals receive less and less food, while the pigs grow fatter. The common animals are very upset, because since the revolution there has been a resolution that no animal shall trade with a human.

Yet, as the story progresses we soon see some animals are more equal than others… Written in an elegantly simple style, Orwell uses the turmoil faced on the farm by the animals as a metaphor for the Russian Revolution itself.

It suggests an uprising is futile, that things will remain how they have always been neither getting better nor worse. After some time Snowball presents his idea to build a windmill, to produce electricity for the other animals.

Orwell cleverly plants lies, illiteracy and even a head hunt throughout the novel to explain the oppression, propaganda and elaborate excuses that led to the rise of the Soviet dictatorship. The other animals remember that there is a commandment that forbids sleeping in beds, and so they go to the big barn to look at the commandments.

Although the "common" animals have not enough food, the pigs grow fatter and fatter. Jones comes back some times later with some other men to get back his farm. Snowball is a better speaker, he is active and full of ideas. A little later the pigs move to the farmhouse.
